Film About Deaf Performance Poet Earns Reward
A short film about a deaf performance poet won Best Short at the Minneapolis-St.Paul International Film Festival last month. “White Space” follows the deaf performer as he makes his debut at an open-mic night for a hearing audience. It was written and directed by Minnesotan Maya Washington and stars deaf actors Ryan Lane, CJ Jones, and Zendrea Mitchell.
Maya, who is hearing, relied on consultants from the deaf community to give the story authenticity. She has taken her work one step further, creating the White Space Poetry Project to encourage deaf artists to perform in the mainstream world of film and literary arts.
